Oh Du lieber August – A grand tour with Augustus the Strong

A grand tour: this was the obligatory long journey made by budding princes, young and wealthy merchants or British gentlemen of standing in order to familiarise themselves with art and culture, the Mediterranean countryside, food and wine and the latest tastes in music. Despite the fact that these young men were in Italy incognito, their identities were easily discerned and so artists, writers and musicians soon gathered around them, acting as guides for these foreigners (who were as conceited as they were rich) and, in so doing, hoping to gain a commission for themselves. It was as participants in this cultural exchange that Handel went to Italy and Vivaldi’s music made its way to Dresden: this was how the spirit of Italy and her way of life added lustre to the cooler climes of northern Europe.
