Venice – Dresden – Zerbst, or Dreams of the Power of Music

Antonio Vivaldi’s powers of expression and his ability to convey moods and feelings in music in a quite personal and inimitable manner gained him scores of admirers north of the Alps. At the court of the Saxon elector in Dresden Vivaldi’s music was enthusiastically collected: this therefore became the place from which the Venetian’s fame spread to the younger generation of composers who then strove to leave their own mark on the history of music. In Zerbst a young conductor named Johann Friedrich Fasch became one of the keenest students of the Venetian’s style, absorbing it and making it his own. His fresh, powerful and graceful music is certainly worthy of rediscovery.
